information DESCRIPTION

About us:

We are based in Edinburgh, but we have members across the Lothians and also throughout Scotland and in England. Although our core activities such as open meetings, informal social get-togethers and social events/outings are based in and around Edinburgh, anyone is welcome to join regardless of where you live.

Established in 1987, Edinburgh Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Self-help Group (Edmesh) has been supporting people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) in Edinburgh and the Lothians for over a quarter of a century.

What is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis?

M.E. is a debilitating disease characterised by severe, disabling fatigue and post-exertional malaise. Sometimes referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS), M.E. is estimated to affect 250,000 people in the UK. 90% of people with M.E. are forced to reduce or stop work because of their illness, and the worst affected 25% are housebound. There is currently no known cure or diagnostic test for M.E., although complete or partial recovery is possible.

Although most of our members have M.E., we also welcome carers, family and friends, indeed anyone with an interest in M.E. or CFS.

Please note that Edmesh is run by volunteers and has no paid staff or office space, so you may get an answering machine: please leave a clear message.

We cannot offer medical advice or professional counselling, and you may want to try one of the National ME charities' helplines for this.

We aim to provide support, information and friendship to people affected by this illness by offering the following:

- Quarterly newsletters.
- Open meetings with guest speakers.
- Informal social get-togethers.
- Telephone contact group.
- Postal library service.
- Members' social events & outings.
