information DESCRIPTION

The Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin was set up in 1995 by a group of parents who wanted to provide an opportunity for young people from across the city to come together and learn skills in traditional Scottish music. Over the past 20 years we have grown from strength to strength and, in addition to the hugely popular annual Easter event, EYG has a year-round programme of workshops and performance opportunities for young people aged 9 - 25. These opportunities range from the weekly Craigmillar Ceilidh Club and Wester Hailes Music Mondays where young people can learn skills in singing, song writing, guitar, fiddle, whistle and keyboard to performance opportunities at international festivals abroad!

EYG’s flagship Easter event takes place during the Easter holidays. Around 120 young people (P5-S6) take part in four days of workshops led by some of the country’s finest traditional musicians. The event is supported by a team of volunteers, and workshops range from fiddle and accordion to songwriting and internet radio production. Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin is for anyone; whether you’ve never played before, only just started or you are an experienced player or singer. You don’t need to have experience of traditional music or be able to read music to enjoy EYG events.

EYG events are run entirely by a voluntary committee who are supported by a freelance Development Worker who works approximately three days per week. About one third of the committee members are former participants.

Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin is a Hands Up for Trad project.
