COVID-19 Service UPDATE...

Adaptive (Chair) Yoga with Jean Itier

Mondays 6:00pm - 7:00pm via Zoom

Even if you weren’t a participant before face-to-face classes were suspended, you can join the Zoom sessions – to do so, please email Jean, jean@yogatherapyedinburgh.com. If you aren’t familiar with Zoom, don’t worry, it is straightforward. Jean will explain what to do.

The usual contribution requested per session is £3 but the Branch is offering new participants a free trial for the duration of the Covid-19 restrictions. However, donations can be made to the Branch via our JustGiving page but please do not add Gift Aid as the Branch is not allowed to claim it where a service has been provided in relation to a donation. It would also help our Treasurer if you identified the activity e.g. Adaptive Yoga.

Normal service details...

The overall aim of the programme is to improve practitioners’ psychological well-being as well as having a positive effect on mobility problems experienced by people living with Parkinson’s. Care-partners can attend.

Participants meet (minimum 5 people and maximum 10) for about an hour to learn tools which they can take home and practise between classes. It is therefore a combination of class-led and home-based Yoga practice. In the classes, there is an opportunity to talk about experiences with the home practices, the obstacles that inevitably arise, and how to deal with them skilfully. Booking is essential for this class, and please note, there is a flight of stairs to the upper level in the conservatory.

In the programme participants learn to:

- Become familiar with the workings of the mind
- Deal with negative thinking and negative emotions
- Perform basic yoga sequences to improve joint mobility and strength
- Use the breath to calm the mind and relax the body
- Use therapeutic meditation to acknowledge one’s emotional state of mind
- Use visualisations to deal with pain and/or discomfort

The Adaptive Yoga Programme’s aim is to:

- Improve one’s ability to manage negative thinking and negative emotions
- Lower blood-pressure
- Improve sleep
- Increase confidence and energy levels
- Improve posture and reduce muscular pain
- Strengthen weak muscles and release tight ones
- Increase joint mobility
- Give an overall sense of wellbeing and relaxation

We ask participants to make a contribution of £3 to each class.
