information SERVICE DETAILS

The Corstorphine Literary and Geographical Society meets in the Burns Hall on Monday evenings at 7.45 pm with access available at the rear on St Ninian’s Road. The meeting finishes by 9.00 pm.

Membership fee is £20 for the year while non-members pay £2.50 per meeting. New members are welcome.

Known as “the Lit” the Society will soon start its one hundred and thirty ninth year; originally the Corstorphine Literary Association began as a men only group in 1856 but in 1880 it became open to the public.

The programme commences on the first Monday of October and provides power point presentations, a film night, at least two musical evenings and occasionally a talk without photos. The large 3-metre-square screen ensures that even those at the back of the hall have an excellent view.

The Lit’s meetings are as much a social event as anything else, enabling neighbours and friends to have a break from the “box” on dark winter Monday evenings. With a leisurely (but prompt) start at 7:45pm, everyone knows that they will be on their way home by 9:00pm – a feature which is particularly appreciated.

The talks themselves will include a wide range of topics for all tastes and include slides, presentations and guest speakers.

There are ten meetings up to December and ten from January to March.

The meeting posters are displayed on notice boards throughout Corstorphine.

The group runs October - March.

Our President will welcome members old and new.

Telephone the Honorary Secretary, Valerie Thomson, on 0131 339 6115 for more information.
