About the Substance Misuse Service
The key aim of CHAI’s Substance Misuse Service is supporting people with addictions (both alcohol and drug related) towards harm reduction, stability and recovery outcomes. This is in line with the Road to Recovery, the Scottish Government’s national drugs strategy that focuses on recovery but also looks at prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, education, enforcement and protection of children.
CHAI SMS is a partner in the South West Recovery Hub along with City of Edinburgh Council Alcohol & Drug Referral Teams & NHS Substance Misuse Directorate. There are other partners in the Hub which can be accessed such as VOCAL, Simpson House or ELCA. We work closely with NHS Lothian and with The Health Agency to deliver effective interventions to service users and can provide a variety of information on Recovery Networks.
What we do
Every CHAI SMS service user is supported to develop and work towards an individual Recovery Support Plan. A variety of supportive interventions are offered in-house including needle exchange, core support, dry blood spot testing, cognitive behavioural therapy and a range of therapeutic interventions aimed at relapse prevention and promoting the journey to recovery. This holistic approach leads to a smoother recovery, helping service users build on the tools and motivation to achieve their goals.
All services can be accessed once a referral has been received and an assessment attended, however, use of the needle exchange, dry blood spot testing and SMART Recovery group are also available to non-service users:
- Needle exchange: The Healthy Living Centre, 30 Harvesters Way, Edinburgh, EH14 3JF from 2pm – 4pm
- Dry Blood Spot Testing: This is a finger prick test for HIV, Hep B Hep C. Appointments can be made by phone or in person.
Our current groups:
- SMART Recovery Group: Monday 11am - 12.30pm at The Healthy Living Centre,
- Acupuncture: Thursday afternoons at The Healthy Living Centre,
- Mindfulness: Tuesday 4pm at The Health Agency within The Healthy Living Centre (contact Sharon McLean on 0131 453 9406 to confirm space)
SMART Recovery is a science-based addiction support group where we learn self empowering skills and support each other in our recovery. These groups aim to be peer-led however this one is currently facilitated by CHAI SMS. SMART Recovery has a 4 point programme:
- Building and maintaining motivation
- Coping with urges
- Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviours
- Living a balanced life
Auricular Ear Acupuncture and Qigong Meditation – Five acupuncture points in your ear are stimulated by very small acupuncture needles. This detoxifies the body and reduces cravings for alcohol and other drugs. Having Auricular Acupuncture also reduces anxiety, promotes relaxation and gives the participant a restful sleep. Our group also take part in a Chi Gong meditation whilst receiving their treatment.
Mindfulness is a form of relaxation meditation based on the Buddhist philosophy. It helps with symptoms or depression and anxiety. It is also used to prevent relapse in drug and alcohol addiction.
