Networking Key Services Ltd (NKS) is a health and welfare organisation working for South Asian women and their families living in Edinburgh. The vision of the organisation is to improve the quality of life for South Asians and the mission is to provide a common platform for South Asian women to act collectively to raise health and welfare issues of relevance to them.
The primary aim of NKS is to alleviate deprivation and isolation experienced by South Asian women and their families living in Edinburgh and to promote positive health and well-being among them. Our role is to make South Asian women active citizens living in Scottish society by engaging them in various activities at NKS and by supporting them to access mainly mainstream services of interest to them in Edinburgh. We believe that South Asian communities are disadvantaged and marginalised that leads to social exclusion. NKS aims to provide a range of services that would help to work towards social inclusion of South Asian women and children.
The project strives to raise women’s confidence allowing them to integrate into the wider society. NKS works on the principle of holistic approach to health and welfare where users socio-economic and health issues are addressed to improve their quality of life. A Community Development approach is used and users are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the running of the organisation.
Nari Kallyan Shangho (NKS) was set up in June 1987 in Edinburgh by a group of Bangladeshi women who wanted to have a place where they could meet regularly and provide their community with services. They secured premises on Dalry Road where the project ran from for many years. One of the first things that they set up was the playgroup, which has over the years grown into the NKS Childcare Facility of today. The project grew to include women and their families from Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani origin. In 1996 NKS moved to the current premises in Darroch Annexe. Many different groups run at NKS over the week and the organisation provides them with innovative and life enhancing activities.
