Out of the Blue - social capital through cultural partnership.

Out of the Blue was launched in 1994 with a single aim: to promote participation in the arts as a tool for social inclusion and urban regeneration. Whether it is helping up-and-coming artists establish themselves by providing affordable studios, administrative and promotional support or engaging with deprived communities through hands-on-arts projects.

From its inception Out of the Blue’s mission has been to provide opportunities for artists and other people who face barriers to creativity, to meet, work, participate, enjoy themselves, learn and develop skills and knowledge. Out of the Blue has established a reputation as an independent, dynamic and innovative cultural social enterprise. Out of the Blue is one of Scotland’s leading community, cultural and arts development organisations working in partnership to provide economic, cultural, social and educational opportunities, to a significant number of people to make a real difference to their lives.

Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee with charitable status with two trading subsidiaries, The Bongo Club Ltd and Out of the Blue Productions.

Out of the Blue create jobs and opportunities as a social enterprise financed through trading, investment and loans.

Out of the Blue has a proven track record as a vital catalyst for creativity and social change in Edinburgh and beyond.

Since 2004 out of the blue’s headquarters has been the Out of the Blue Drill Hall, a building of considerable historical and cultural significance to the Leith community. Careful, sustainable restoration and regeneration has transformed this former military building into a participatory and inclusive arts and cultural centre, with artists’ studios, rehearsal and performance arenas, exhibition spaces and a well-reviewed café. The Out of the Blue Drill Hall is a vibrant, fun, and inclusive place, where people can experience all kinds of innovative contemporary arts, enjoy the creative atmosphere, meet, discuss, eat, relax, learn.

Out of the Blue has transformed the Drill Hall into a centre for participatory arts for the benefit of the local and artistic communities using best practice with regard to environmental sustainable materials and processes.

The design work has been acclaimed for its quality of design, build standard and environmental sustainability.

The studio and workshop spaces are heavily insulated and an array of solar tubes have been installed to provide the Drill Hall’s hot water.
