The Richmond Cafe aims to provide a place where people can meet each other, have a decent meal at a very low cost, and feel less alone. The cafe seeks to be an integral part of the local community. We encourage people to eat more healthily both through the cafe and our food cooperative.
We help people who are moving into their first tenancies by giving them access to quality low cost furniture and small household goods and helping them to become a part of the existing community.
We are concerned for the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of the local community. The project has been established for six years and is both respected and supported by the local community.
The project began in October of 1999 when the café opened. The food cooperative had been running for just over a year before that. The café was initially only open for four hours a day, but within a year it was open for forty hours a week because of local demand. It has always been run by people from the church and the community working together.
