We are a creative writing and mentoring centre that improves levels of literacy, self esteem and fosters aspiration in under resourced students from 8-18.
The Super Power Agency is a new and exciting charity founded by The Invisible Woman and some like-minded superheroes to help some of Edinburgh’s most deprived children close the all-important attainment gap in education.
The Super Power Agency will offer a creative writing and mentoring centre based in Leith that improves levels of literacy and self-esteem and fosters aspiration amongst under-resourced 8-18 year olds.
The Invisible Woman says “we know and understand the profound difference that one-on-one attention can make to these children so the Agency aims to empower them with the most fundamental of the Super Powers: the ability to read and write”.
HOW DO WE KNOW IT WILL WORK?
The Super Power Agency is based on the highly successful 826 Valencia model pioneered in America and replicated elsewhere in the world. This model has as its basis a workshop space where volunteer mentors spend one-on-one time with the children. The workshop is supported by a retail store – a creative and fun space which acts as a magnet for the children themselves as well as for potential supporters and mentors.
Most of the 826 Valencia projects are headed by writers (826 itself was started by David Eggers). Edinburgh is a city of writers and the Super Power Agency has already enlisted native authors like Ian Rankin and Kevin Williamson as founding members and hopes to attract the support of other prominent authors and poets.
WHO’S INVOLVED?
The Super Power Agency has a team of trustees that have a broad range of talents.
