In line with Government advice, most groups and organisations in the city have had to take the unfortunate decision to suspend face to face and group work activities. Please telephone or email the contacts listed for the group or organisation if you are interested in their work to check what alternative arrangements might be available or to find out about alternative groups or services in your area.

Hearts and Minds

Artful Minds is a new Hearts & Minds approach to engaging with people living with dementia. This experiential training aims to increase skills and confidence, influence creative responses, as well as giving ideas for translation into artistic practice. It is suitable for artists of all art forms.

The training day is designed to suit artists already working with people with dementia as well as those who are curious to gain first insights. Activities and exercises provide an opportunity to explore and deepen understanding within a supportive workshop environment.

Devised and delivered by Magdalena Schamberger, Artistic Director at Hearts & Minds, the training focuses on experiencing challenges associated with dementia and old age.

Artful Minds has been developed by Magdalena as part of a prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Breakthrough Fund Award project. The award is supporting Magdalena to develop a new engagement with people living with dementia beyond the hospital environment and into a theatre and community setting. It will culminate in the development of bespoke performances for people living with dementia and their families in 2017.

What people say about Magdalena’s approach:

“Magdalena’s profound sensitivity, analytical perspective and well-honed expertise position her as a unique, inspiring go-to resource for any artist interested in understanding effective, compassionate processes and methods for working with people with dementia and memory loss. Building on her decades of work in theater and clowning, Magdalena has developed an innovative, accessible and versatile platform that promises to serve a variety of artists and service providers across disciplines. Above all, her vision for engagement and collaboration provides deeply inspiring motivation toward action. If there’s ever a chance to work with her, take it.”

Specially designed props used in the training have been developed in collaboration with Designer, Matt Coombes of Contradictory Design. Matt specialises in challenging the way people think about experiences through objects.

Artful Minds was launched on the 7th March at The Studio, 22 Potterrow, Edinburgh.
