information SERVICE DETAILS

Foundations in catering and hospitality: An eight-week course (one morning per week) with an additional employability session (optional).

Includes knife skills, food hygiene, food preparation, barista coffees and customer service.

Upon completion of the course, trainees are supported to progress to a training placement (in our community café or elsewhere).

This is one of the most in need sectors for employment in Edinburgh at the moment and over half of our last intake went on to secure work in hospitality!

All trainees receive catering experience in a real life café environment and participate in SQA training through Edinburgh College, depending on their aspirations, personal needs and abilities. These voluntary placements are suitable for people who have a barrier to employment such as an additional support need or learning difficulty, long term unemployed, care-experienced, caring responsibilities, mental health difficulties, and experience of the criminal justice system.

Fancy becoming a trainee on our Cafe Training Project? We are recruiting young people and adults who struggle to find work. Trainees are valued in their role and are supported by a team of professionals who focus on increasing their skills, confidence and emotional resilience.

- Real life work experience
- Staff who believe in you
- Accredited training
- Support with next steps

What is the Café Training Project?

Situated in the vibrant Broomhouse Community Café, the Café Training Project was established in 1997 to provide real-life work experience and training to people in Edinburgh who struggle to find work.

What sort of tasks would I be involved in?

Trainees participate in daily tasks such as preparing food, cleaning, setting tables, stock taking, cash handling and customer service.

Trainees are also encouraged to embark on and achieve accredited training in line with their aspirations and abilities.

Will I work with other people?

Trainees develop their confidence through working with staff, other trainees, volunteers, and customers.
