Edinburgh Schools Film Competition is a partnership between Screen Education Edinburgh, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Arts & Creative Learning, City of Edinburgh Council that first began in 2008. Open to all pupils in nursery, primary and secondary education within City of Edinburgh, East, West and Midlothian establishments, the competition sees selected films share the festival limelight with leading filmmakers from around the world.
The unique aspect of this project is the core role of a panel of judges made up of young people studying media studies at Edinburgh schools, who work with SEE and EIFF to learn about short film watching, understanding and curation to select the films and decide on the awards in each category for both screenings that take place at EIFF in June – nursey/primary level and secondary level. The young people’s jury also present the films and awards at each event.
The competition is open to everyone and we encourage all schools to get involved. In previous years we have had animations from nurseries, awareness videos, comedy sketches, dramas, music videos, film trailers and every other genre you can think of.
