The EVOC Red Book

The online directory to find third sector Organisations, and their services across Edinburgh

Directory of local groups/projects who are offering specific support during the current COVID-19 pandemic »

In line with Government advice, most groups and organisations in the city have had to take the unfortunate decision to suspend face to face and group work activities. Please telephone or email the contacts listed for the group or organisation if you are interested in their work to check what alternative arrangements might be available or to find out about alternative groups or services in your area.

Firsthand Lothian

We have a great deal of experience of working with children and their families in the home. With funding from Better Breaks, Children in Need and Volant we are now able to offer a wider range of childcare and respite services to families with children with disability up to 18 years of age and who would benefit from time limited input once a week for a few hours delivered by a volunteer or family support worker to help them achieve thier goals.

Our grant funding also enables us to work with vulnerable and lone parent families who do not have children with disability but require some regular respite and support on a short term basis.

We can deliver flexible and tailored respite to meet both the needs of the parents/carers, your child/ren with a disability and their siblings. This whole family approach, delivered in the family home where children feel secure and comfortable, save parents / carers time, planning and other all the other challenges we know there are when you need to travel to access respite services for one child with a disability.

Registered and inspected by the Care Inspectorate and awarded the top grade of 6 - “Excellent” at our last inspection, our co-ordinators will come to meet with you in the family home to discuss your needs and the needs of your child and children and agree with you what service you want from our trained and supported staff and volunteers.

We can, for example, look your child with a disability and their siblings at the same time leaving you free to enjoy much needed respite. We can provide a trained and experienced member of staff and a volunteer so that your child with disability gets specialised one on one attention and activity specific to their needs, whilst a trained volunteer spends time with siblings. We can take your child/ren to activities in the local community, to play in the local park - it is up to you to decide what works best for your family.

With a minimum session of 2 hours, our service is available to you during the day and evening, 7 days a week. Please note we are not registered to provide overnight care and support.

Our charge for this tailored and flexible service is £18 per hour and can be purchased through a private arrangement or Self Directed Support.

We are continuing to seek grant and trust funding to enable us to expand our services so that we can work with more families and children in the Edinburgh area.
