Football Memories is a product of Alzheimer Scotland’s pioneering work on their Football Reminiscence project and a partnership with the Scottish Football Museum.

Big Hearts’ Football Memories was launched in 2013 and trains volunteers to spend time with older people living with dementia who have an interest in football, talking about teams and matches from the past and working with images and memorabilia to stimulate memories and improve the wellbeing of those attending.

The project’s extraordinary impact is perhaps best summed up by the wife of one of the men who attend these meetings: “He’s a different person when he comes out… It’s put new life into him, and you can see that with all the men there.”

Over the years, Big Hearts’ Football Memories developed into a social group of older football fans with a wide range of backgrounds, including people living with dementia, stroke survivors and those at risk of social isolation.

Our programme runs twice a month at Tynecastle and over recent years has been visited by many former Hearts players including ‘The Golden Vision’ Alex Young, Alan Anderson and Freddie Glidden.
