We organise a programme of Garden SOS days from March to October to help with garden clearance for those most in need. The events are held on weekdays and weekends with small groups of volunteers.
Garden SOS days are a team exercise. They tackle a problem in a garden and in doing so help to develop skills and support our garden partners.
New growers have the opportunity if their garden plot needs a lot of work to get growing, to have a group of volunteers help them to get a plot cleared initially. This helps prevent volunteers being overwhelmed by a big overgrown plot and gives support to the garden owner quickly.
The SOS sessions work well and helpers enjoy a before and after clear physical task in an outdoor social setting. We have designed a new model for their delivery to involve wider groups and partners. We aim to enhance our programme to reach wider groups of younger people through developing our partnership working with youth and voluntary groups, we will also offer more one off community and corporate volunteering opportunities.
We would like to thank the One City Trust in supporting us in our development of the SOS programme and to our partners The Rock Trust and their Compass Step Up Community Volunteering Programme and Volunteer Centre Edinburgh (young persons programme).
