An interactive community of Scottish cultural organisations
Initiated by Creative Carbon Scotland and Festivals Edinburgh in 2013, the free-to-join Green Arts Initiative supports Scottish arts and cultural organisations to reduce their impact on the climate and environment, and to be at the forefront of creating a sustainable future for our sector and beyond.
How it works
The Green Arts Initiative is a proactive network which aims to build and maintain a Scottish green arts community. Run by Creative Carbon Scotland, with oversight and support from a steering group of Green Arts members, it operates by:
- Supporting the sharing of relevant knowledge, ideas and experiences
- Enhancing the sustainability competencies of arts organisations across the country
Members are encouraged to use the Green Arts Initiative branding on their publicity online to demonstrate their commitment to developing a greener arts sector throughout Scotland.
Who is eligible to join?
The Green Arts Initiative focuses on providing support for cultural organisations based in Scotland. Both professional and community organisations are welcome to join. The list of artforms on the sign-up form gives an indication of the main areas of the cultural sector that we currently support.
All organisations that join the network nominate a member of staff as their Green Champion, who is the main point of contact within the Green Arts Initiative. They also make the following two commitments:
- We will strive to improve our environmental efforts each year
- We will complete the annual feedback form on the environmental action we’ve taken each year.
Creative Carbon Scotland is starting to explore how we can also provide support to individual artists and freelancers in the cultural sector. For now, individuals are invited to subscribe to the CCS newsletter to keep up to date with these developments. If you are an individual maker of crafts, the Green Crafts Initiative will provide the most relevant resources for your work.

- A digital branding to highlight your membership of this nationwide network to everyone you work with.
- Contact time via phone and email to answer your queries and research problems.
- Forums for direct online contact between members for sharing advice and resources.

How many members are there?
We have more than 300 members, most of whom represent cultural organisations, but also including some networks, collectives and self-employed individuals.
