German Fighting Arts

7:30pm - 9:00pm at the Charteris Centre.

This class focuses on the use of the longsword and messer according to fencing books written in the 14th and 15th century, such as Johannes Lecküchner and the Pol Hausbuch.

First Tuesday of the month: Beginners and Fundamentals

Last Tuesday of the month: Fight-Night

Train and fight using the medieval German Longsword system!

Led by Jack Fraser, this class is mainly derived from Lichtenauer's Goliath text and has a dedicated study group.

Evolved during Germany’s violent Middle Ages, the system focuses on attacking first and blitzing your opponent with a barrage of simple yet elegant techniques. Probably the best documented medieval martial art, German Longsword is applicable to all European swords used in two hands, including longsword (aka ‘bastard sword’), greatsword, claidheamh mòr/claymore and two handed sword.

We welcome any level from absolute beginner to veteran. The classes roll through the syllabus continuously throughout the year, so you can drop in and out without losing track. But, if you want to get good, you’ll need to come regularly…

Each session is self contained and includes a 30 min free play slot for more experienced students.

Equipment

For new students, a pair of gloves and loose clothing suitable for physical exercise with footwear such as trainers, is the minimum you will need. There will be some spare equipment to lend out but please do bring what suitable equipment you may have.

Training fees...

If you are not sure you’ll attend regularly enough to make monthly payments worthwhile, members may purchase a ten session payment card for £80.

Drop-in fees (pay as you go): Single session attendance costs £10.

A monthly subscription of £30 a month entitles you to attend as many weekly sessions as you like. Members can use the button below to set up their subscription.

Concessions

If you are interested in attending but feel you cannot afford these rates, please contact us and see if we can arrange a concessionary price. Fencing is fun, and we want to do it with as many people as possible.
