The group is inspired by the Paddlers for Life network of dragon boating clubs for women with breast cancer, their friends and family
The group has two Dragon Boats – Isla May (the big boat) and Emma (the little boat).
We have relocated one of our boats to the Union Canal at Bridge 8 Hub!
The group paddle out most weekends and the ethos is non-competitive. A wide range of men and women join us each week to laugh, talk and support each other.
How physically fit do I need to be to paddle in a dragon boat?
Dragon boating is a fun and accessible sport for people of all ages. If you are a team player who is reasonably fit (e.g. can get in and out of a boat with minimal assistance and can walk up a flight or two of stairs without difficulty) and you enjoy being on the water, then we urge you to give it a go! Dragon boat paddling offers the opportunity for people of all ages to take part in a team sport. There is also an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a healthy social life. It is the ultimate sport for everyone to learn team work and have a great time.
What do I need to wear or bring to go paddling?
Dress in comfortable clothes that provide good freedom of movement. You may need to step in the water, so wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (e.g. waterproof shoes, Crocs, old sneakers, etc.). In the cooler winter months it is advisable to wear a long-sleeved thermal top. Bring a change of dry clothes and shoes - just in case you get wet!. Be sure to wear sunscreen, sunglasses (don’t wear expensive ones that could accidentally fall in the water), a snug-fitting hat in the colder months and be sure to bring a bottle of water, especially in the summer.
Is there place where I can change into my paddling clothes?
Yes - Port Edgar and the Bridge 8 Hub have changing rooms.
Is there parking?
Parking is available at Port Edgar and Bridge 8 and is free of charge.
If you would like to join us on the Canal or just come along and see what we are all about please feel free to join us at 10:30am on Saturday mornings at Bridge 8 Hub - outdoor Activity Centre.
