COVID-19 UPDATE...
This winter, rehearsals continue online.
We began sectional rehearsals online on Wednesday September 23rd.
Sadly Covid 19 stopped every choir in the country in its tracks back in March. But we have some serious plans for a return to live singing. As soon as we possibly can once government guidelines on gatherings and on indoor singing are eased, we plan to rehearse in St Mary’s Cathedral: we have an invitation from the Provost of St Mary’s to do so as soon as arrangements can be finalised. Our musical director and the Provost have looked at the space in detail, and they are confident that it is easily possible to sing with social distancing of 2 metres and more in a well ventilated space. There is also a possibility of providing small groups of singers on some Sundays to sing liturgical music in the cathedral.
Are you interested in joining us? Or do you want to ask some questions about our plans to start singing again? You can get in touch via the Contact Us page at https://chapterhousesingers.com/contact-us.
We are currently looking for tenors in particular.
Normal service details...
Chamber choir of around 35 members. We give two concerts a year and sing the services in St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral some six Sundays a year. Our music is mainly church music but we also sing secular pieces and cover a broad range of music.
We constantly strive to improve and develop as a group. Because we sing the Cathedral services six times a year, we cover a great range of music in the course of a season. This requires us to perform unaccompanied as well as with orchestra or organ. We are often accompanied by distinguished organists such as John Kitchen, the city organist and organist at the Usher Hall.
Knowledge of music, ability to sight-read and experience of choral singing are necessary to enjoy singing with us.
Rehearsals...
The Chapter House Singers rehearse every Wednesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in the Song School of St Mary’s Cathedral, Palmerston Place (EH12 5AW), surrounded by the murals painted by Phoebe Traquair between 1888 and 1892. We meet in Teuchter’s Bar, William Street afterwards.
Rehearsal and performance terms run from early September to December and January to June with a long summer break: equivalent to university semesters. Our concerts usually take place in December and June. We sing the services in the Cathedral on various dates: usually in September, October, January, February, March and May.
There is parking on Melville Street just outside the Cathedral (free in the evenings) and any bus route past the West End or Shandwick Place will get you close to the Cathedral. To find the Song School, go to the Manor Place end of the Cathedral (the back door, Melville St end). Go into the Cathedral car park. The Cathedral is on your left. Turn right at the end of the car park. The Song School door is ahead of you, beside the new medical centre.
