We are independent group in Edinburgh that provides an opportunity for people with Dementia and their carers to come together to socialise and to sing, with the emphasis on enjoyment and fun. We are not choirs, and do not aim for performances.
What do we do?
We meet for coffee and a chat first, giving people a chance to socialise and also to find help, advice or support from volunteers or other members of the group.
After that, we sing together enjoyably and in a relaxed atmosphere for around 45 minutes.
There is a singing leader and an accompanist. Our repertoire is varied and is built upon requests from members. We are not choirs and do not aim for performances.
Songs include requests, everybody's favourites, and usually a few Scottish songs.
What are our aims?
The Singing Groups offer stimulating and social activities designed to enhance well-being, and provide enjoyment and confidence to lives affected by memory problems and Dementia.
Research shows that such activity reduces stress and agitation — encouraging a ‘feel good’ factor in all. Volunteers are on hand but those with dementia should be accompanied. There is no charge, but a small donation towards refreshments is appreciated.
The singing group is a stimulating activity for all that comes along and everyone leaves with the feel good factor and a smile on their faces.
If you are interested in the group but are unsure if it's for you, then why not come along and have a coffee and a chat in a relaxed atmosphere. The choice is then yours whether you participate in the group singing or simply sit back and enjoy the music.
Volunteers are on hand but people with Dementia should be accompanied.
