What is it?

All Aboard is a canal-based project nurturing community cohesion and wellbeing. Together, People Know How and Polwarth Parish Church run and maintain a canal boat, docked at the Polwarth Pontoon on the Union Canal.

The project was launched in June 2019 and was followed by a successful consultation and project pilot, both of which identified the Union Canal as the community's collective cultural heritage. By opening our canal boat to the community, we aim to serve as a safe space in which to explore the canal, find new experiences and socialise, while surrounded by nature.

Within this community space the All Aboard canal boat:

- Hosts People Know How’s projects, providing opportunities for children, young people, families and adults to learn, grow and socialise outdoors, experiencing something new and exciting while increasing confidence and participating in the community
- Provides opportunities for individuals to gain volunteering or work experience in supporting us to maintain our canal boat
- Increases community cohesion through cultural, social and spiritual events with a model of gathering, sharing, doing and celebrating together
- Supports the community as it recovers from the coronavirus pandemic

Our work has been commended by the parliamentarians as "inspiring", in an article featured by the Church of Scotland. We have also been featured by Allchurches Trust and made appearances on BBC Radio Scotland, STV News and BBC Songs of Praise.

Volunteer...

Want to volunteer on our boat?

We offer unique volunteering experiences as a crew member or helmsperson on All Aboard. Volunteers support us to run and maintain the boat, taking young people, families and adults on trips on the Union Canal.

Volunteer today to gain work experience, add to your CV, develop new skills, or simply enjoy some time on the canal!

Apply to volunteer at https://peopleknowhow.org/all-aboard.

Collaborate with us...

Help us nurture community cohesion

We collaborate with partner organisations, community groups and individuals, providing them with a space to enjoy the canal or use the boat for art, music, culture, heritage, meditation or anything else!
