Creating opportunities for recovering substance users

Transition helps people in recovery from substance misuse move into education or employment. Participants must live within Edinburgh and Midlothian and be aged between 16 and 65.

Those who take part in Transition receive the support of a professional caseworker, who works with them to overcome the problems they face and achieve their education or employment goals.

Transition offers bespoke training to provide the relevant skills that people need to enter college or the workplace. It also offers the chance to gain relevant qualifications (in partnership with Edinburgh College).

Other benefits include:

- College visits, access to College courses, and funding support.
- Access to work placements in a wide range of sectors.
- Support to gain volunteering placements.
- Entitlement benefits are not affected and transport and lunch costs are normally provided.

About the Transition programme

Our step by step approach ensures that students get the help and support they need to move on in life.

Step 1. Assessment

This is a chance for students to re-evaluate their circumstances and consider their ambitions. Students identify the courses they wish to study for and agree their days for attendance.

Step 2. Starting the Programme

On the first day students have an induction with a caseworker to develop an individual learning plan and set key goals. These key goals are broken down into achievable steps.

Through Transition, students attain an SQA qualification in Personal Effectiveness.

Step 3. Completing the Goals

Weekly and monthly reviews take place to see how students are progressing in their individual learning plans. Caseworkers discuss and support students as they work through their weekly programmes. Every week our students attend they take a real step forward and are better placed to find a job.

Step 4. Moving On

Students are given one-to-one supported as they move on to training for work placements, further education and employment. All students are supported once they have achieved their career goals and moved on from the Transition programme.
