Barnardo’s Scotland has been working in Scotland for more than a century. Our purpose is to reach out to the most disadvantaged children, young people, families and communities to help ensure that every child has the best possible start in life. We aim to make sure that every young person is able to reach their full potential, whatever their circumstances in life.
Today we run more than 130 community-based services across Scotland.
The scheme aims to help those above the age of 16 who are leaving care and trying to find their way in the world at an age when they are expected to assume full adult responsibilities. Finding somewhere to live, continuing an education or securing a job can be difficult enough at the best of times and in the best of circumstances. Barnardo’s Scotland’s 16+ scheme, which operates in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, is an attempt to ease that move into adulthood for those with the extra challenge of leaving care.
16+ Edinburgh helps young people develop key independent living skills like cooking, household chores and living within their budget, skills that they may have missed out on as children. When they leave we help them secure permanent accommodation and remain available to offer support in all their lives.
Barnardo’s Scotland Fostering Edinburgh recruit, train and support foster carers to provide a range of fostering services for children and young people aged 0 - 18 years.
The service promotes quality care, careful matching and place the child at the centre of all that we do.
We offer exceptional support and training to all our carers, with career progression and competitive benefits, which include:
- Fostering Network recommended allowances
- A generous fee for each child placed
- Comprehensive training and specialist advice
- Experienced, knowledgeable support workers and 24 hour telephone advice line
- Carer support groups and forums
- Children and young peoples support services
- Free membership of Fostering Network
The Service works with up to 17 local authorities across Scotland. Our carers come from Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife and the central belt.
Barnardo's Scotland Fostering provides foster placements and child therapeutic services to children and young people with a range of additional support needs.
Barnardo’s Works is an innovative service supporting young people from deprived communities to secure independent, sustainable employment. The Barnardo’s Works model is a four step programme that partners with employers to get young people into work. We engage, train and qualify young people aged 16 to 24 to support them towards a positive destination.
This scheme provides an opportunity for employers to contribute to the youth employability agenda. We can match excellent young people to quality work placements which lead to long term employment.
Barnardo’s Works is a practical way of matching the potential of young people with the needs of employers. By working together, we can ensure that the hardest to reach young people, those furthest away from the jobs market, are given access to the opportunities available.
