What is ‘Probus’?

The British Probus Club movement began in 1965. Probus is an abbreviation of the first three letters of the words ‘PROfessional’ and ‘BUSiness’. Originally Probus Clubs were set up for retired or semi-retired business or professional men but now they are not restricted to such groups. Today there are over 4000 Clubs worldwide.

Probus Clubs have no central governing body. However, all clubs exist to provide an opportunity for retired persons to attend regular meetings with like-minded people and to enjoy the camaraderie that belonging to Probus brings. In the UK and Ireland, Clubs are kept in touch with other Probus Clubs by a colour magazine entitled ‘Probus’ which is published quarterly free of charge and distributed to Clubs.

Probus Clubs are unusual in that, although existing worldwide, there is no central organisation. This effectively means that all clubs are individual and do not have to conform to the rules and regulations of a central office. All clubs, however, adhere to the Probus philosophy, which is that clubs exist for the purpose of advancing intellectual, cultural and social interests among adult persons who have retired or are semi-retired from their professional business. While the men's clubs consist, on the whole, of retired business and professional members, the ladies' clubs recognise that managing a home and raising a family is a professional business and qualifies for membership.
