Trustees and Directors Network...

Being on the board/management committee of a third sector organisation is a demanding role, requiring an understanding of a range of complex issues and taking on a unique set of responsibilities. Trustees/Directors of Social Enterprises need to understand the opportunities and challenges of generating income through trading along with the responsibilities of governance and overseeing a business with a social purpose.

The Network for Trustees and Directors of Edinburgh Social Enterprise members is a new network helping build your skills, knowledge and confidence.

ESE has established the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Trustees and Directors Network to help individuals and boards or committees develop knowledge, skills and expertise relating to there roles and responsibilities and to highlight best practice within that.

Who is this for?

The network is for Trustees or Directors of organisations which are members of ESE. Roles may include officers such as chair, vicechair, treasurer, and secretary, as well as other board or management committee members. The network is not normally open to employees of Social Enterprises unless they also hold a role as a director or board member.

Benefits of the network: networking – meeting Trustees and Directors from other social enterprises; peer support – participation in discussions sharing knowledge and experience; skills development – access to training to build skills, knowledge and confidence; signposting, to other networks,- offering additional professional expertise and support; access to other ESE events

Aims

- Bringing Trustees or Directors together in a safe, supported and confidential space to identify share and discuss issues affecting them in their role on boards or management committees of social enterprises.
- Offering access to advice and support and training from experts around identified issues, i.e., roles and responsibilities, legal structures, business development planning, impact reporting, company law, employment law, relationships with staff and volunteers.
- Signposting to other relevant support networks
- Creating opportunities and support for those becoming Trustees or Directors.

Objective

To strengthen the Social Enterprise sector through building the skills, knowledge and expertise of Trustees and Directors. This builds the capacity of the individual, their associated organisations and in turn the wider sector thereby strengthening the role of Social Enterprises as key providers of services and products that contribute to social and economic development.

Meetings

The network will meet quarterly and as the rules allow meetings will be a mixture of a physical meeting with online access too.

The first meeting will be held early in 2022 and we also hope to make a variety of new resources available directly to members at this time too.

To note your interest in this event (member organisations only) please email gordon@edinburghsocialenterprise.co.uk.
