Barnardo's is one of the few organisations to help children with a parent in prison. We run training services for professionals as well as services in the community and in prisons to help maintain contact and support family relationships.
Barnardo’s provides information, support and guidance to children and families in prison visits centres in HMP Edinburgh. Our specialist, trained workers and volunteers provide a friendly and supportive environment for visitors to ensure that the visit is a positive experience for everyone.
Our visit centres provide:
- A welcoming area where visitors can sit down, have refreshments, use our child-friendly play area and relax in comfortable surroundings before their visit.
- Information and advice, including guidance about prison procedures, travel and transport, financial wellbeing, health, parenting and services in your local community.
- Support and information packs for first time visitors.
- Emotional and practical support following visits.
Family support
Supporting parents, carers and families in the community and in diverse cultural circumstances. Guidance and advice aimed at supporting vulnerable children and their families.
Family contact
Enabling looked after children or children of prisoners and their families to enhance contact and strengthen family relationships, providing a positive experience.
FareShare Food
We have FareShare food available for the families attending our HMP Visitors Centre.
