information SERVICE DETAILS

Social isolation is a state of overwhelming lack of contact between a person and their community. Each person’s experience is different, but social isolation can affect up to one third of the population at some point in their lives.

Britain is the loneliness capital of Europe

Loneliness can be further complicated by ageing, bereavement, disability, discrimination, domestic violence, physical and mental ill-health, poverty, stigma and unemployment.

It can happen to anyone. It can happen at any age. It is an issue for all of us.

Our community activities and supports, developed in line with A Connected Scotland, the Scottish Government’s strategy for tackling social isolation and loneliness, are focused on supporting individuals and communities to flourish. We work with people to prevent the debilitating and crushing feelings of loneliness that can lead to an increased risk of heart attack, dementia, depression and early death.

Our community development approach...

Means that we work within communities, actively engaging and listening in order to understand the gaps in society and where we can have a positive impact. We have a proven track record of tackling the causes of social isolation, improving people’s wellbeing and sustainably increasing community resilience.
