Redwoods Music Therapy

We provide music therapy for Redwoods clients and non-Redwoods clients, and offer a service to suit a wide variety of different needs. This can be in our own purpose-built facility or elsewhere.

What is Music Therapy?

Music is a really powerful tool. We passionately believe that it can be used to connect with people, regardless of difficulties or disability.

At its heart, music therapy uses spontaneous music making as a means of communication within a therapeutic relationship, without the need for words. Both client and therapist are involved in playing instruments, using their voices and listening. No previous musical knowledge or skills are needed.

A range of instruments are used – we have a wide range of small and large percussion, xylophones, guitar and piano.

Music therapy can help people in a number of ways, including:

- Aid communication
- Increased awareness of self and others
- Reduce tension and anxiety
- Express difficult feelings
- Increase confidence and self esteem
- Improve concentration
- Increased sense of wellbeing

The British Association of Music Therapy (BAMT) has lots of information about music therapy and how it can be used. (https://www.bamt.org/)

Our Facilities

We offer two options – you can come to us, or we can come to you.

Coming to us - The Garden Room

Our designated space for music therapy is based in Newtongrange, Midlothian (in the grounds of Redwoods House). It is an accessible, warm, cosy, light room and well stocked with a fantastic range of instruments. It can accommodate individual or small group sessions. There is free parking and a disabled toilet available.

Coming to you - Peripatetic Service

If you have a suitable space for music therapy, we can come to you. Our music therapist will come to you and bring a selection of instruments to use. The cost is slightly higher, to take account of travel costs.

Our Music Therapist

Paul Barfoot is the Music Therapist for Redwoods Music Therapy Service. Paul has worked with Redwoods for over 20 years, and is passionate about the power of music to connect with people and bring about change. He has also worked extensively using music to work with people living with dementia.

Sessions and Costs

Sessions will usually last 30 – 45 minutes and can be organised for individuals or groups. Each session is tailored to individual needs: for some clients 30 minutes may be too long, whereas another person may need a little longer to fully engage.

The cost of each session is as follows, and invoices will be sent to you:

Sessions held at the Garden Room:

- Individual session £35 per session
- Group session £50 per session (split between participants)

Peripatetic Sessions:

- Individual session £40 per session
- Group session £55 per session (split between participants)

We would usually recommend an initial series of 6 sessions to allow both client and therapist to see whether music therapy is a beneficial intervention. If sessions are continued, regular reviews can be planned.

HOW TO APPLY

If you have any further questions about music therapy or would like to discuss booking some sessions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at musictherapy@redwoods.org.uk
