A vibrant home

Nestling in the Grange, one of Edinburgh’s most exclusive and leafy suburbs, St Raphael’s is an impressive, bright and airy art deco building with 63 en-suite rooms. The attractive grounds include a specially designed Sensory Garden and some bedrooms have direct access to a roof garden. Indoors is equally impressive with lounges overlooking beautiful Blackford Hill. The heart of this caring community is the dining room, complete with bar and sitting area. It’s here that our popular singing group, Viewpoint Voices, meets for practice. Residents have a choice of activities including movie nights, trips to the beach and gardening. Overseen by an exceptional nursing team, St Raphael’s is bustling with life and we’d love you to be part of this vibrant community.

All our rooms are single - occupancy, ensuite with wet floor showers. Our rooms are furnished with variable height electric beds and furnished with bed side locker, fitted wardrobes, telephone connection facility, are wi-fi enabled and can accommodate the resident’s own TV and personal electronic equipment. Each unit has an assisted bathroom.

Subject to fire safety regulations, residents can if they choose, bring small personal items of furniture, such as a reclining chair and decorative items in order to personalise their room. Rooms vary in size (see fees section) and all comply with the National Care Standards.

Our gardens are designed to create a dementia friendly landscape for our residents where they can enjoy time with family and friends.

In collaboration with Impact Arts we provide a unique Craft Café experience where our residents are supported to explore their artistic skills. In addition, the home has a weekly activities programme , including outings in our own minibus.

Nursing and Dementia Care

We want to help you enjoy life to the full here at St Raphael’s, so your wellbeing is our top priority. The moment you step into this art deco building you’ll receive a warm welcome and individually tailored care. Whether dispensing medications, managing chronic illness, providing end of life care or simply chatting our staff will ensure compassion, patience and kindness; this is at the heart of everything they do. For people requiring specialist dementia care, a dedicated unit is available on the first floor. Purposefully decorated in bright colours and consisting of 14 rooms, the space has been sensitively adapted for those living with this condition.

Staffing arrangements

St Raphael's has 63 bedrooms in 4 units. Each unit has a team of Registered Nurses and Care Assistants, both day and night. Rutland Unit has 20 residents, Waverley Unit 17 residents, Holyrood 14 and Cunningham House 12. The number of staff is dictated by a dependency tool which is based on the care and support needs of the residents. Registered Nurses routinely assess the needs of the residents and decide when extra Care Assistants are required. In addition, we have a 24 hour nurse call system in our residents’ rooms. We also make use of automated monitoring technology to ensure residents’ safety and minimise the risk of falls. We have a dedicated Activities Coordinator who organises internal and external activities and outings for all residents who wish to participate.
