Young-Onset Service
What is Young Onset Dementia?
Dementia as a condition, is often associated with older people, however around 4% of people diagnosed are aged under 65. This is called Young Onset Dementia and usually affects people in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
Some of the symptoms of Young Onset Dementia can include:
- Memory difficulties
- Confusion or disorientation
- Changes in personality or behaviour
- Language difficulties
- Challenges in planning or problem solving
Often the early signs of Young Onset Dementia can be overlooked or attributed wrongly to stress or depression. If you are worried about yourself or someone else who is presenting symptoms, please contact your GP.
What do we offer?
Alongside our core service, we now offer a Young Onset Service. We provide person-centred outcome focused support, which will be tailored to your specific needs. The service will be based at our centre, although the activities of your choosing will mainly take place at other venues. Our staff and volunteers can provide one on one support and small group support, consisting of 2 or 3 members. Some examples of the activities we can support you to engage with are gardening, swimming, computing, snooker, golf, bus trips and walking etc. Also included in the service are light meals, transport, company and support for a minimum of 4 hours.
Who can qualify?
In order to access our service you must meet the following criteria:
- Diagnosis of Young Onset Dementia
- Live in North East Edinburgh
- Receive direct payments for day care or alternatively, fund the service from your own income. Costs can be discussed on application to the service.
Our Young Onset Service is a fantastic opportunity for you to make friends and meet other people who share your diagnosis, whilst being supported by someone who respects and understands you and your condition. If you are interested in our service and would prefer to ‘try before you buy’ please contact us for a free trial session.
