Description

Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) works hand-in-hand with children’s services to link families in need with local volunteers who can offer them help and support.

When a crisis strikes a family with children, its effects can be devastating. Many of us would turn to relatives and friends for support but some families can be really isolated with nobody there to help them. Stabilising families before they reach a breaking point is key to reducing the number of children who need to go into care. Safe Families has been privileged to help over 2500 children since it was launched in the UK in 2013.

Volunteering can change a life

Safe Families provides Family Friends, Host Families and Resource Friends to help while parents get back on their feet.

When crisis strikes a family, the effects can be devastating, and far too often it’s the children who suffer most. Many of us would turn to relatives and friends for support, but what would you do if you couldn’t? Though hard to imagine, this is a challenge that many families face. Safe Families for Children Scotland provides isolated families going through a difficult time with support and guidance by offering friendship, resources and a short break for children until their parents are back on their feet with a stable support network around them.

Who We Help

Safe Families for Children is best-equipped to serve with families with younger children, usually with at least one child under the age of 10 in the household. Respite stays with our ‘Host Families’ are offered to children aged 10 and under, except in instances of sibling groups when older children may be cared for together with their younger brothers or sisters.

The only restrictions to the type of family difficulties for which Safe Families may be able to help is that our volunteers are generalists rather than specialists, and as such ought not assume the role of professionals in handling complex disabilities or behavioural issues.

Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) accepts referrals from partnering local authorities, matching struggling families with caring volunteers in their area who can provide tailored help and ‘wraparound’ care. Involvement with Safe Families makes a crucial difference for some families in preventing the need for children to go into care by providing early intervention to families until they get back on their feet.
