Shakti Women's Aid

Shakti opened its current refuge on 4th February 2004 which consists of four self-contained flats with a shared space for a children’s play room and an office. Shakti also has access to City of Edinburgh temporary accommodation.

Staffing and support

Support services:
5 keyworkers are available at off-site office Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. Maintanance worker available on-site Tues-Fri 9am-5pm. 3 part time staff at refuge - support workers available Mon-Fri 4pm-10pm, weekends 10am-10pm. Staff visit residents daily to weekly as needed. Staff offer emotional and practical support to women and children, advocacy, counselling and information.

Health services:
Work closely with Saheliya who support black and minority ethnic women with mental health needs, a MEHIP, who enable minority ethnic communities to access primary health care.

Access to move-on:
Provide advice on move-on options and help with resettlement in keywork meetings. Help with removals and provide follow-up support.

Refuge details:
- Accommodation: 4 Rooms
- Cost:: £14 pw required from residents in receipt of benefits.
- Facilities: Flats fully furnished, garden with play area for children.
- Food: Self catering.
- Disabled facilities: One flat is accessible for wheelchair users.
- Resident access: Own key, must be in by 10pm.
- Visitors: Not allowed.

User participation:
Regular meetings with residents to get feedback and evaluate service. Comments book and box.

Public transport:
Waverley train station - 30 minutes walk. Buses 3, 7, 31, 37, 49.
