Directory of local groups/projects who are offering specific support during the current COVID-19 pandemic »

In line with Government advice, most groups and organisations in the city have had to take the unfortunate decision to suspend face to face and group work activities. Please telephone or email the contacts listed for the group or organisation if you are interested in their work to check what alternative arrangements might be available or to find out about alternative groups or services in your area.

Organisation

Vine Trust

Details
Vine Trust offer a range of expeditions across the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, all of which support our local partners as they seek to build up the capacity of some of the most marginalised communities in the area.

Providing safe accommodation for some of the most vulnerable communities is central to our work and so all our expeditions support our home-building programme financially, as well as providing volunteers with the opportunity to engage in this work practically whilst in Tanzania.

With our short term expeditions lasting from one to six weeks, we invite you to help us ‘Connect People to Change Lives’ through our varied volunteering programme.

Volunteering

Home-Building

Joining a home-building expedition offers you the opportunity to witness and experience the stark realities of choices (or lack of them) that many communities in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania face.

Expeditions are usually made up of 15-25 volunteers who spend two weeks working at grassroots level with our Tanzanian partners, helping to construct small homes for marginalised families, and also larger children’s centres for vulnerable children and orphans.

Cost

The cost for home-building teams in 2016 is £1,250 and prices for 2017 are TBC. Costs include a minimum £370 contribution towards building materials and wages for local builders in Tanzania.

Not included in this cost are the price of international flights (which will be booked by the Vine Trust), the cost of any immunisations and anti-malarials required, visa entry fee (currently $50) and optional safari.

Medical

In 2015 we established a medical project in Tanzania, replicating the model of our Peru Medical and Dental Programme on Lake Victoria. In the Lake's Tanzanian waters alone there are over 150 island communities, perhaps as many as 500,000 people without access to healthcare. Numbers and isolation make these communities difficult to assess and provide for – and so they are, for the most part, neglected.

Our medical ship allows us to reach these communities with a regular primary healthcare service, aiming to serve over 100,000 people annually. To find out how you can join on of our medical expeditions click here.

Teaching

Invest in young people through volunteering in schools and vocational training centres

Whatever your area of interest, we have a teaching opportunity for you! Maybe you could teach English as a second language, or share your enthusiasm for art, music or drama. Perhaps you could support local kindergarten and primary schools in different subject areas, or share your knowledge in secondary schools. Or do you have vocational skills such as tailoring, catering, IT or woodwork which you could use?

Although a teaching qualification is helpful, it’s not essential as long as you have a passion for young people and can be creative in enthusing learning with limited resources. We’re also looking for those with an education background to share different teaching and learning techniques with Tanzanian teachers and supporting staff in continuous professional development.

Costs start from £1,250, plus flights, for two week expeditions. Contact expeditions@vinetrust.org or phone 0131 555 5598 to find out more about our different expeditions and to discuss costs.

Care

Show some of the most marginalised children and babies that you care

Join one of our care expeditions and help look after vulnerable children in one of our centres for orphans, or help care for those with physical and learning disabilities. Build relationships with the children and support them with homework, after-school and weekend activities, and offer staff practical support with washing, cleaning and cooking. We also have opportunities in day-care centres and pre-schools.

Help young people realise their right to play through sports coaching, games and activities

Share your love of sport and help coach young people in schools and in community clubs. Whether skilled on the football pitch or looking to facilitate multi-sport community events, you’re guaranteed a high-energy expedition—stamina essential! You may even find yourself helping to create outdoor sports areas and playgrounds to provide a fun environment for children to come together and play in safety.

Creative

Help vulnerable young people express themselves through creativity

Be inspired by our creative expeditions and offer your skills in music, art and drama. Kilimanjaro Marathon

The race

In case you’re worried you have to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the race, be assured that the route takes you around the base of the mountain, so no need to train for steep terrain or altitude! The only thing you might not be able to train for is the heat. Although the race starts in the cool of the early morning, temperatures can rise to around 25 degrees a few hours later.

With Mount Kilimanjaro as your constant backdrop, the race takes you through the town of Moshi and out into banana and coffee plantations, through villages, farms and forests, and back into Moshi, finishing at the MUCCOB University Stadium—a spectacular route, whatever distance you choose.

There are 3 distances available:

- Full Marathon (26 miles/42km)
- Half Marathon (13 miles/21km)
- 5K Fun Run (fancy dress encouraged!)

Why get involved?

This unique ‘Marathon Work Party’ with Vine Trust offers you the opportunity to set yourself a great personal challenge:

- To complete a marathon in another country and climate
- To raise as much money as possible (minimum £300 donation) to support Vine Trust’s construction projects to build homes for vulnerable children and orphans
- To see first-hand how your marathon fundraising is being spent by working alongside our Tanzanian partners to build the homes
- To be involved in practical ways to make a difference through the building project
- To understand more of the issues behind poverty
- To become an ambassador for the poor, speaking up for those who don’t have a voice
- To experience another culture and learn from others
- To connect with people to change lives

If you would be interested in taking part in this challenge, please email expeditions@vinetrust.org to register your interest. Please note that we need a minimum of 15 people for the trip to go ahead, so why not get your friends, family and colleagues signed up to run with you?
