BGC is offering an exciting new growing and learning programme for schools, youth groups, and nurseries. The programme gives children and young people opportunities to

- Visit BGC’s allotment site with their class and teachers/ leaders
- Learn how fruit and vegetables are grown
- Take part in hands-on gardening and cooking activities supervised by BGC staff
- Prepare a healthy lunch prepared from produce harvested at the allotments
- Take their newly-learned skills back into school, and use them to create an edible garden
- Share their knowledge with parents and other pupils

These activities encourage children and their families to make positive choices about eating and physical activity, while providing children with important connections to the wider community and the green spaces within it. Using our outdoor classroom, schools are able to deliver many Experiences and Outcomes within Curriculum for Excellence. Cross-curricular learning through growing food features all seven of the CfE’s seven principles of curriculum design: Challenge and enjoyment, breadth, progression, depth, personalisation and choice, coherence, and relevance.

The ‘Young people are growing on’ courses are funded by Liberton & Gilmerton and Craigmillar & Portobello Neighbourhood Partnerships and Big Lottery Fund and are FREE!
