In line with Government advice, most groups and organisations in the city have had to take the unfortunate decision to suspend face to face and group work activities. Please telephone or email the contacts listed for the group or organisation if you are interested in their work to check what alternative arrangements might be available or to find out about alternative groups or services in your area.

Carers have so many things to think about – why not book an appointment at VOCAL’s free carer advice surgeries and let a specialist adviser help you?

VOCAL runs the following free regular advice surgeries for carers in Edinburgh and Midlothian:

The following surgeries are available at VOCAL Edinburgh carer centre:

Power of Attorney...

A Power of Attorney is a written authorisation to represent or act on another’s behalf. At this surgery people with support needs and their carers can create Power of Attorney documentation replacing the need to visit a solicitor. Power of Attorney is important for all of us but might be particularly useful if someone has a progressive condition.

VOCAL offers carers free monthly appointments with an independent adviser, to support them to write and register a Power of Attorney document.

This free service should replace the need to visit a solicitor.

Legal Surgeries...

Many carers are concerned about the future, especially the financial security of a loved one. Working in partnership with a solicitor, VOCAL is offering free 30 minute consultations, for information and advice about key issues such as Wills, Trusts and Guardianship. These issues are important for everyone, but might be of particular interest for parent carers, and for people caring for someone with confusion or memory problems.

Planning for the future is particularly important if a member of your family has a disability, physical or mental health problem, addiction or long term condition.

You may want to make provision for them in your will, and they may need support to manage any money that you leave them.

Long-term Care...

Many carers are concerned about paying for care home fees, how much they will have to pay, and what happens to property. A Chartered Financial Adviser can explore options with carers. This surgery would be of most benefit to carers where the move to long term care will take place in the next 6 months.
