The EVOC Red Book

The online directory to find third sector Organisations, and their services across Edinburgh

IMPORTANT

Directory of local groups/projects who are offering specific support during the current COVID-19 pandemic »

In line with Government advice, most groups and organisations in the city have had to take the unfortunate decision to suspend face to face and group work activities. Please telephone or email the contacts listed for the group or organisation if you are interested in their work to check what alternative arrangements might be available or to find out about alternative groups or services in your area.

Details
Imagine being homeless and losing all of your possessions. You could be sleeping on a friend’s sofa, living in a hostel, or on the streets. You’ve not only lost your material possessions, but any hope for the future. Then you are offered the tenancy of a flat, a glimmer of hope, an opportunity to start again. But you have nothing – no pots & pans, no cutlery, no bedding, no towels – the list seems endless. Where do you begin?

Fresh Start can help by providing our Starter Packs, basic essential household goods to help set up and sustain your new home. There are ten Packs in total, and they contain: Cleaning products; crockery and cutlery; curtains; food; pots & pans; single or double bedding; small electrical appliances; pamper packs; toiletries and towels.

The Starter Packs Service provides new tenants who have been homeless with essential items to set up their home. The packs help relieve the financial burden that many new tenants face. Over 10,000 packs are distributed each year allowing around 2,000 new tenants across Edinburgh to benefit from the service.

Congregations, organisations, businesses and individuals throughout Edinburgh donate household goods that allow us to make the packs. Volunteers make them up into 10 different household packs. In addition to household items, we also provide food starter packs. These ensure that an individual or family moving into a new tenancy will be able to eat some hot filling meals within the first few days, making their income stretch further at an expensive time.

Every Pack helps to make a fundamental difference to the quality of people’s lives. For example: bedding to keep warm at night; curtains to feel secure; pots & pans to cook a hot meal; crockery & cutlery to eat the meal; cleaning materials and other items that all help to make a house a home.
